CHICKASHA — Texas Wesleyan University (26-11, 10-16 SAC) suffered a doubleheader sweep on Friday at Bill Smith Ballpark, falling 6-5 and 5-2 to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (28-16, 18-9 SAC) in two tightly contested matchups.
In Game 1, the Rams jumped out early with an RBI double from Ryan Flores in the first inning, scoring Brendon Vela. Texas Wesleyan extended its lead in the fourth when Brandon Rincones launched a three-run home run to left—his first of the season—giving the Rams a 4-1 cushion.
However, USAO capitalized on late mistakes. Starter Samuel Mendez (3-3) allowed three runs in the sixth inning, aided by wild pitches that led to unearned runs. In the seventh, with the Rams clinging to a one-run lead after a clutch RBI single from Tahir Meulens, the Drovers responded with a two-run single from Gunner Hansen to walk it off, 6-5.
Vela led the Rams at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, while Rincones and Flores each contributed multiple RBIs. Texas Wesleyan outhit USAO 12-9 and played error-free defense but couldn't hold off the late rally.
Game 2 followed a similar script. After falling behind 3-0 in the second inning, the Rams responded in the fourth when Logan Silvertooth belted a two-run homer to left, bringing home Flores and cutting the deficit to 3-2.
That was all the scoring Texas Wesleyan could muster as USAO added two more runs in the sixth. Jorge Carvajal (5-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs—three earned—over 5.1 innings. He struck out three and walked one while throwing 118 pitches.
Texas Wesleyan was held to six hits in the nightcap. Vela again stood out with a pair of hits, including a double, while Flores and Gabriel Supelveda each chipped in one hit apiece. Despite solid contact, the Rams couldn't convert their base runners, stranding five on the day.
With the sweep, the Rams conclude the regular season portion of their schedule and await the announcement of who they will travel to play in the SAC Conference Tournament.
