VICTORIA — Texas Wesleyan University dropped to 3-3-0 after a 5-1 loss to Texas A&M-Victoria at The Cage on Thursday. The Jaguars (2-2-0) capitalized on early and late scoring opportunities to secure the victory.
A&M-Victoria opened the scoring in the 13th minute with Jervan Matthew's goal, assisted by Baillie O'Reilly and Kei Matsuyama. Murray Brieley extended the lead in the 28th minute, assisted by Mosiah Bonney. Texas Wesleyan responded in the 58th minute when Jesus Rodriguez scored, assisted by Louis Guffroy, cutting the deficit to 2-1. However, the Jaguars pulled away with Yahir Pena's goal in the 61st minute, assisted by O'Reilly, followed by an own goal in the 80th minute and O'Reilly's second goal in the 88th minute, assisted by Matthew.
The Rams outshot the Jaguars 21-13, with eight shots on goal to A&M-Victoria's eight. Texas Wesleyan earned 10 corner kicks compared to the Jaguars' one but struggled to convert, hitting the crossbar twice. Joel Kisukulu and Diogo Stefane each had shots on target, while Pablo Bances and Peter Tenorio also tested A&M-Victoria goalkeeper Tyler Kaeppeli, who made seven saves.
Axel Tonietto started in goal for Texas Wesleyan, allowing two goals with one save before Jesus Diaz took over in the 46th minute, making two saves while conceding three goals. Kaeppeli played the full 90 minutes for the Jaguars, securing the win.
Texas Wesleyan committed six fouls and A&M-Victoria eight, with no cards issued. The Rams showed offensive pressure but couldn't overcome the Jaguars' clinical finishing.
The Rams will return tio action at Martin Field at 8 p.m. Monday to take on the Steers of Texas College.
