FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan University (10-4, 7-0 SAC) defeated John Brown University (6-8, 2-4 SAC) in four sets with scores of (20-25, 26-24, 25-18, and 25-19). The Rams remain undefeated in conference through seven matches.
In the first set, both teams proved to be well matched as both teams traded points early on without one giving an inch to the other. The Golden Eagles started to separate themselves within the set going up 13-9 and trying to seize control. The Rams answered back with a four point swing to tie up the set. Both teams continued to trade blows with things staying close late in the set. Even though the Rams battled every point, they fell short as the Golden Eagles pulled away and won the first set by a score of 25-20.
In the second set, the Rams were looking to tie things up by taking the set. The set started out the same way as the first with both teams staying close to one another, the Rams were the first ones to step up and take a 12-9 lead, looking to build their lead even more. The Golden Eagles answered right back and used that momentum to take a 20-16 lead with a 2-0 set lead in mind. The Rams once again battled back little by little with the help of
Hanna Rubis and
Sydney Alexander to tie the set late at 24-24. The Rams offense continued to put pressure on the Golden Eagles and forced them to make two errors that cost them the set. The Rams took set two with a score of 26-24 and tied the match at one set each.
In the third set, the Rams were looking to build upon their set win and use that momentum to take the third set as well. Rubis once again was a menace for the Golden Eagles defense as she was responsible for four kills on her own early on, keeping the Rams offense alive early on. The Rams used that high powered offense to start to pull away and take a 19-14 lead.
Victoria Smith helped lead the charge late in the set and helped the Rams win five more points to take the third set by a score of 25-18 and a 2-1 set lead.
Loes Peijnenburg was the one to deal the final blow and gave the Rams even more momentum going into the fourth set.
In the fourth set, the Rams were looking to their third set in a row to finish off the match in four sets. The Rams got started early with some solid defense and took a 7-2 lead to start the set. The Rams then showed some offensive firepower once again with the help of
Lyric Biggiers and found themselves increasing their lead to seven with a score of 16-9. The Rams continued to use that momentum and take a 20-15 lead late in the set, with the match seemingly coming to a close. Rubis finished off the Golden Eagles and lifted the Rams to a 25-19 victory in the fourth set, helping the Rams win 3-1.
Rubis led the Rams with 12 kills, followed by Biggiers with 11, and Alexander with seven.
Lillian Breaux and
Ruby Rumohr combined for 40 assists to aid the Rams offensive attack.
Emily Lewis recorded 20 digs to keep the Rams strong defensively. Rubis also added 10 blocks and two service aces.
The Rams are on the road next week as they travel to Goodwell, OK to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State on Friday, Septmeber 26 at 6pm.
