VB: Rams Power Past Aggies

GOODWELL - Texas Wesleyan University (11-4, 8-0 SAC) defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State University (7-8, 5-3 SAC) in a four set match by a score of 3-1.

In the first set, the Rams and Aggies went back and forth, starting the match off with both teams showcasing their power and defensive prowess. The Aggies had some costly service errors to continue to give the Rams points. Late in the set, the Aggies started to pull away and found themselves up 21-18 with the first set in sight. Victoria Smith gave the Rams some life with a strong kill, but was quickly answered with two points from the Aggies to put them up 23-20. Loes Peijnenburg and Hanna Rubis pushed the Rams over the Aggies to win the first set 26-24 and an early 1-0 lead.

The second set started with some major point swings from both teams. The Rams started the set up 4-1, quickly folowed by a four point swing from the Aggies as they pulled ahead 5-4. Migdaly Bernal added some solid power to force the Aggies to have some errors and helped the Rams with a five point swing to go up 9-5. The Aggies scored seven of the next ten points to tie the set at 12-12 with both teams looking to pull ahead. Lyric Biggiers had several kills to help the Rams lead the set late by a score of 21-19 and a hopeful 2-0 set lead. The Rams had three more kills to stay ahead and had the Aggies at match point with a score of 24-23. Unfortunately, the Aggies won the next three points and took the set 26-24 to tie the match up at 1-1.

The third set saw a little bit of the same as the second set as the Rams got out of the gate early with a score of 7-5. The Rams continued to use that omentum to take a big lead in the middle of the set with a score of 18-10. The Rams remained in control of the set with the help of attacks from Smith and Sydney Alexander to secure the third set by a score of 25-17. The Rams regained control of the match with a set score of 2-1.

The fourth set saw the same once again as the Rams got out of the gate early with a 6-2 set lead. Rubis and Alexander continued to showcase the Rams offensive power as they continued to build their lead throughout the set. Smith and Lillian Breaux joined in on the action as the Rams controlled the set and secured their victory with a 25-16 final, winning the match by a score of 3-1. The victory helps the Rams remain undefeated in conference play and extened their win streak to eight games.

Alexander led the team with 13 kills, followed by Smith with 12, and Rubis with nine. Breaux and Baylor Rodgers combined for 39 assists to aid the Rams attack. Emily Lewis led the team with 20 digs to solidify herself as a defensive cornerstone for the Rams.

The Rams return to action tomorrow as they travel to Plainview, TX to take on Wayland Baptist University at 1pm.
