PLAINVIEW - Texas Wesleyan University (12-4, 9-0 SAC) defeated Wayland Baptist University (6-7, 5-4 SAC) in four sets with scores of (25-23, 25-20, 20-25, and 25-19). The Rams remain unbeaten in conference while the Pioneers fall in both contests this weekend.
In the first set, the Pioneers got out to an early 7-2 lead over the Rams. With the help of some offensive power from
Migdaly Bernal and
Hanna Rubis, the Rams fought their way back and took the lead 15-13 and looking to keep their momentum going. The Pioneers had other plans as they won the next four points to lead 17-15 with the set in sight.
Victoria Smith and
Lyric Biggiers joined the Rams attack parade with a few of their own and helped the Rams pull ahead. The Rams momentum carried them to a first set victory with a score of 25-23 and a 1-0 set lead.
The second set started off with both teams neck and neck as the Rams started up 6-5 early on in the set. The Pioneers once again took the lead in the middle of the set by a score of 12-10, looking to extend their lead. The Rams capitalized on the Pioneers offensive mistakes and wound up winning the next five points to lead 15-12. The Rams and Pioneers continued to have multi-point runs with the Rams pulling away and finding themselves up 21-16 with another set victory in mind. The Pioneers once again had some miscues, that along with a kill from Smith, the Rams were once again victorious with a score of 25-20.
In the third set, the Pioneers were looking to extend the match, while the Rams were looking for a sweep on the road. The Pioneers got out to a quick 4-0 lead and were looking to control the set early.
Sydney Alexander and Bernal gave the Rams the firepower they needed as they stormed back and led 12-9 that included a seven point run. Both teams continued to battle point after point and the Pioneers eventually took the set with a score of 25-20, bringing the match score to 2-1 still in favor of the Rams.
The fourth set was a set of swings to start things off as the Pioneers got off to a hot start, then the Rams followed, and that pattern continued until the Rams found themselves up 13-12. Smith and Alexander had a pair of kills to give the Rams some momentum, that momentum proved to be the difference as the Rams never looked back.
Loes Peijnenburg and Biggiers were huge in the Rams fourth set push as they outscored the Pioneers 12-6 in the remainder of the set to win 25-19 and take the match by a score of 3-1.
Rubis led the team in kills with 11, followed by Alexander with nine and Biggiers with eight.
Ruby Rumohr and
Lillian Breaux combined for 36 assists and
Emily Lewis led the team with 20 digs, followed by Rumohr with 15. Biggiers added five blocks to help the Rams defense.
The Rams return home next weekend as they take on Langston University on Friday, October 3 at 6pm inside the Sid Richardson Center.
