Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY - Texas Wesleyan University (5-4, 2-0 SAC)) defeated Oklahoma City University (3-5, 0-2 SAC) in four sets by a score of 3-1 with scores of (23-25, 27-25, 25-11, and 25-23). The Rams move to 2-0 in the opening weekend of conference play.
The first set started off with both teams showcasing their offensive firepower as each team earned several kill points to stay neck and neck throughout the set. The stars started to pull away and create a four point separation going up 19-15 and looking to take control of the set. After a kill from
Hanna Rubis followed by an Ace from
Migdaly Bernal sparked a five point swing and in turn put the Rams back in front 20-19. The Rams and Stars continued to go back and forth with the Stars pulling out front and winning the first set 25-23.
The second set saw much of the same with strong offense shown by both teams to continue trading blows throughout the set. With several key kills from Rubis and
Sydney Alexander, the Rams stayed competitive in every point and battled the Stars every step of the way. The Rams benefited from a service error and an attack error by the Stars to secure the set 27-25 and tie the match at one set a piece.
The third set was all Texas Wesleyan as the Rams got out to an early 10-7 lead to begin the set. The Rams then won six consecutive points to create a solid lead in a key point within the match. Alexander, Bernal, and
Lyric Biggiers led the way offensively with a barrage of kills to help the Rams take control of the set.
Emily Lewis added two clutch service aces to secure the set 25-11 in favor of the Rams to then take a 2-1 set lead headed into the fourth.
In the fourth set, the Rams once again got out of the gates early with a 6-2 lead. The Rams continued to separate themselves from teh Stars and do so with a balanced offensive and defensive attatck. The Rams showcased their depth as Biggiers and
Loes Peijnenburg were the leading offensive players, showing the amount of quality outside hitters the Rams had. The Rams led the set 19-13, but the Stars was looking to take the set back and brought the score back to 23-22 in favor of the Rams. The Rams had a clutch kill from Rubis as well as a service error from the Stars to take the set 25-23 and win the match with a score of 3-1.
Alexander once again led the team with 13 kills, with Rubis adding 10 as well to showcase the Rams firepower.
Lillian Breaux and
Ruby Rumohr combined for 43 of the 47 assists by the team to help facilitate the Rams offensive attack. Lewis once again proved to be the defensive cornerstone with 18 digs.
The Rams return home next weekend to take on the Drovers of University of Science & Arts (Okla.) on Friday, September 12 at 6pm.
