FORT WORTH — Texas Wesleyan University (12-5, 8-4 SAC) secured a 69-64 victory over Mid-America Christian University (12-5, 6-5 SAC) on Saturday at the Sid Richardson Center.
Texas Wesleyan maintained a second-half lead of up to 13 points, despite Mid-America Christian matching them in free throws with 18 made. Notably, Texas Wesleyan achieved a season high with 32 free throw attempts during the game, significantly surpassing their season average of 11.69 free throws made.
The game opened with a layup by Corey Skillman for the Evangels, but the Rams quickly responded with a jumper from
Daylan Hamilton.
Montez Young, Jr. and
Khalil Turner helped establish a slim lead for the home team with a 3-pointer and a fast-break layup, respectively. The teams exchanged leads and ties throughout the half, with Turner's crucial points, including a 3-pointer at the 4:43 mark, keeping the Rams competitive. Shannon Strickland's free throw and James Locke's 3-pointer kept the Evangels within reach. The half concluded with the Rams holding a 32-30 advantage after Turner converted two free throws in the final 34 seconds.
Texas Wesleyan capitalized on a strong second half. The team built a substantial lead midway through the half, highlighted by a pivotal 3-pointer from
Anthony Sierras at the 8:08 mark, extending the margin to 13 points. Sierras had a standout game, scoring a career-high 18 total points, making six of eight shots, and converting three of five 3-pointers. Despite the Evangels' efforts to close the gap, including a late 3-pointer by Clay Baldwin, Texas Wesleyan maintained control. Turner contributed significantly, tallying multiple field goals and free throws, making six field goals, which surpassed his season average of 4.0, and helping the Rams withstand the late push and hold on for the win.
Turner led with 19 points and added five rebounds while also contributing four assists. Young, Jr. scored 14 points and collected nine rebounds, including two 3-pointers. Sierras posted 18 points, making six of eight shots and converting three of five 3-pointers. Hamilton finished with 15 points and grabbed five rebounds, converting six of eight free throws.
The Rams return to action Thursday against John Brown University on the road, with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
