MBB: Rams Beat Pioneers in the Sid, 76-71

FORT WORTH — Texas Wesleyan University (14-5, 10-4 SAC) defeated Wayland Baptist University (15-5, 9-5 SAC) 76-71 at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday. The Rams' defense recorded nine blocks, contributing to the home team's narrow victory.

The first half commenced with Texas Wesleyan securing an early lead with Montez Young Jr.'s layup just 21 seconds into play. The home team maintained their advantage with contributions from Daniel Oravbiere, who added a layup at 18:33. Daylan Hamilton extended the lead to 10-5 with a series of successful shots including a jumper and free throws at 17:03. Despite this, the Pioneers quickly countered, tying the game at 18-18 with a series of plays culminating in Marcus Green's free throw at 10:13. The half concluded with Wayland Baptist narrowly ahead, 37-35, after Julian Perez's free throws.

Wayland Baptist briefly held a five-point lead early in the second half after a layup and free throw by Rico Yarbrough at 18:05. The Rams responded with a strong offensive push, highlighted by Khalil Turner's dunk at 17:50 and Anthony Sierras' three-pointer at 16:00, tying the game at 42. The home team edged ahead with Young, Jr. contributing a key layup at 2:52 to secure a narrow advantage. Hamilton extended the lead with a three-pointer at 1:32, and despite the Pioneers' efforts, Texas Wesleyan maintained their lead, concluding the half with a 76-71 victory.

Young, Jr. contributed significantly with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while also adding three blocks. Turner posted 12 points and collected nine rebounds, alongside four assists. Hamilton scored 13 points, recorded six rebounds, and added two blocks to his performance. Sierras led the team in scoring with 16 points, converting three 3-pointers.

The Rams return to action in the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday against Oklahoma Panhandle State University at 4 p.m. for Senior Day and a special recognition of the 2006 National Championship team.
