MBB: Rams Fall in Second Straight Contest

OKLAHOMA CITY — Texas Wesleyan University (18-7, 14-6) was edged by Mid-America Christian University (18-8, 12-8) in a narrow 77-74 defeat on Saturday at the Gaulke Activity Center. The Rams' bench contributed 24 points, while the Evangels' three-point shooting accuracy stood out with 16 made from beyond the arc.
The contest began with Texas Wesleyan taking an early 5-2 lead following a 3-pointer by DaeVeon Scott at the 18:57 mark. Mid-America Christian quickly responded with a 3-pointer from Jabez Williamson to tie the game at 5. The game remained closely contested until Morris Williams hit a 3-pointer at 14:15, pushing the Evangels ahead 18-11. Despite a rally by the Rams, highlighted by Matt Nero's back-to-back 3-pointers near the end of the half, Mid-America Christian's late scoring surge, punctuated by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Williams, extended its lead. The half concluded with Mid-America Christian leading 48-36.
The Evangels maintained a strong lead early in the second half, fueled by Corey Skillman's three-pointer at 19:29, extending their margin to 51-36. Texas Wesleyan responded with a series of plays, including a three-pointer by Nero at 17:52, cutting the lead to 56-39. The visiting team continued to chip away, with Anthony Sierras hitting a fast-break layup at 9:54, narrowing the gap to 70-56. Despite a late surge, including a layup by Nero at 1:08 to take a brief 74-73 lead, Mid-America Christian secured the win with Skillman scoring the final jumper at 00:44 and adding two free throws with 18 seconds remaining, clinching a 77-74 victory.
Nero led the scoring effort with 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and added three rebounds. Sierras contributed significantly with 20 points, making three shots from beyond the arc and securing five rebounds. Khalil Turner recorded six points and facilitated the offense with five assists, alongside two steals. Montez Young, Jr. provided defensive support by collecting three steals and contributing seven points.

The Rams return to action on the road Thursday in Lasgston, Okla. against Langston University at 8 p.m.
