SHREVEPORT — Texas Wesleyan (20-9) secured an 83-71 victory over Morningside (22-8) in the NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship First Round on Friday. Texas Wesleyan capitalized on a 22-point lead in the second half to advance in the tournament.
The first half began with Texas Wesleyan establishing an early lead with an
Anthony Sierras free throw. Morningside's Kaden Van Regenmorter quickly responded with a 3-pointer, assisted by Tyson Odvody, to edge ahead. From there, the Rams surged with strong shooting from beyond the arc, including multiple 3-pointers by
Daylan Hamilton, who contributed significantly to the team's scoring.
Montez Young, Jr. added crucial points in the paint, helping Texas Wesleyan build its largest lead of 13 points at the 8:30 mark. By halftime, Texas Wesleyan led the Mustangs 43–32, capitalizing on their efficient shooting and bench contributions.
Texas Wesleyan extended its lead early in the second half with a series of decisive plays, including a layup by Hamilton at 18:37 and a three-point play from Young, Jr. at 18:00.
DaeVeon Scott contributed significantly with a 3-pointer at 17:13, followed by a fast-break layup at 16:17, pushing the home team's lead to double digits. Morningside attempted a comeback with Daniel Brocaille leading the charge, scoring multiple times, including a fast-break layup at 10:59. However, the Rams maintained control, with Sierras sealing the game with a fast-break layup at the 12-second mark, securing an 83-71 victory.
Hamilton led the scoring with 22 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Young, Jr. dominated the boards, collecting 12 rebounds while adding 16 points and two blocks. Scott contributed across the board with 14 points, six assists, and two steals. Sierras was efficient from the line, converting 6 of 7 free throws and adding 16 points with two steals.
The Rams will next play against Louisiana State University - Shreveport on Saturday, with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m.
