SHERMAN, Texas — Texas Wesleyan University (1-3-3) played Austin College (1-2-2) to a 0-0 tie on Tuesday at Pierce Complex. Texas Wesleyan withstood five Austin College attacking actions from 72:10 to 84:05 to keep the match scoreless.
Texas Wesleyan generated the larger share of chances in the first half but could not break through, outshooting Austin College 9-1 and earning five corner kicks as the match reached halftime at 0-0. After Austin College had an early corner and its only shot went wide, Texas Wesleyan began pressing with
Rudy Gonzalez forcing saves at 17:54 and 19:02 around two
Diogo Stefane corner kicks, followed by a
Walter Palacios shot that was blocked. The visitors kept producing looks through the middle of the half, with Gonzalez missing wide, Stefane putting a shot on goal,
Peter Tenorio shooting high and another Stefane corner coming in the 32nd minute. Texas Wesleyan added late chances from
Chandler Brookins, Stefane and
Raul Parga, including a Stefane shot saved at 42:40 followed by a corner, but Austin College goalkeeper Erik Beijen made four saves to keep the half scoreless.
Texas Wesleyan kept the match scoreless through the second half, getting three saves from
Noah Epler-McDonnell while creating several chances of its own in the final 45 minutes. The half turned physical immediately with yellow cards to Stefane and
Rudy Gonzalez at 46:45, but Texas Wesleyan followed with early pressure as
Tyrece Grant had a shot blocked, Tenorio missed high and Grant forced a save in the 51st minute. Stefane,
Marco Arduino and
Nestor Salazar added attempts before the middle of the half, and Epler-McDonnell answered Austin shots on goal at 67:27, 72:10 and 82:18. Texas Wesleyan pushed late with a
Jesus Rodriguez corner in the 84th minute and shots from
Christobal Garcia, Stefane and
Rudy Gonzalez over the final six minutes, but the match finished 0-0.
Stefane tied for the team lead with four shots and put two on goal.
Rudy Gonzalez matched that total with four shots, including two on frame. Epler-McDonnell recorded three saves and did not allow a goal in 43:15 in goal.
The Rams return to action Thursday as they travel to Dallas, TX to take on Paul Quinn College at 5:30pm.
