WAXAHACHIE, Tx — Texas Wesleyan University (2-5-4, 0-2-0 SAC) lost to Nelson University (4-4-1, 1-1-0 SAC) 5-3 on Tuesday. Texas Wesleyan matched Nelson (Texas) with 12 shots and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks, but gave up four second-half goals.
Victor Gonzalez brought Texas Wesleyan level in the 40th minute, finishing a
Jesus Rodriguez assist after Rodriguez had served a corner seconds earlier to make it 1-1. Earlier, Texas Wesleyan opened with pressure, generating five attacking actions from 6:45 to 8:14, including saved shots by
Diogo Stefane and
Rudy Gonzalez around a
Peter Tenorio corner. Nelson (Texas) went ahead in the 14th minute on Daniel Alvarado's goal, and Texas Wesleyan continued to look for a response with attempts from
Nicholas Duderstadt,
Leonardo Coronado and Stefane before Gonzalez scored.
Noah Epler-McDonnell made a save on Erwin Julian Beltran shortly after the equalizer, and Texas Wesleyan went into halftime tied 1-1.
Texas Wesleyan made its second-half push through goals from Stefane at 70:03 and
Nestor Salazar, off
Mehdi Def's assist, at 76:58, cutting Nelson (Texas)'s 4-1 lead to 4-3. Earlier, Nelson (Texas) scored at 46:19, 54:36 and 55:29 to put Texas Wesleyan in that three-goal hole. Texas Wesleyan responded with pressure shortly after, earning three Tenorio corner kicks in less than a minute and getting a Stefane shot before his later goal. Nelson (Texas) answered the late Texas Wesleyan comeback bid with a goal at 83:11, and Texas Wesleyan finished the match down 5-3.
Stefane scored an unassisted goal and led Texas Wesleyan with five shots, putting two on frame.
Victor Gonzalez added a goal on two shots, with one on goal. Salazar converted his lone shot and placed it on goal.
The Rams return home this weekend as they take on Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday, October 3 at 3:30pm at Martin Field.
