WAXAHACHIE, Texas — Texas Wesleyan University (3-6-1, 0-2-0 SAC) lost to Nelson University (5-5-0, 1-1-0 SAC) 2-1 on Tuesday. Texas Wesleyan faced 28 shots, including 18 on goal, and recorded 15 saves while generating five shots.
Texas Wesleyan kept Nelson (Texas) off the scoreboard through a first half in which
Adriaa Hardy made seven saves and
Jimena Aguilar added a defensive save. Nelson (Texas) generated five shots and four corner kicks by 11:56, but Hardy stopped attempts at 2:53 and 7:50, and Aguilar turned away a shot at 5:21. Texas Wesleyan's only recorded shot came in the 31st minute, when
Sydney Chavez sent an attempt wide left. Nelson (Texas) pressed again late with six shots and three corners from 32:33 through 44:32, but Hardy made four saves in that stretch to send Texas Wesleyan into halftime tied 0-0.
Texas Wesleyan struck first in the second half when
Maribel Vargas scored off Chavez's assist at 54:40 to put the Rams ahead 1-0. Nelson (Texas) pushed back with a sustained stretch from 56:41 to 65:50, but Texas Wesleyan held the lead through 10 attacking actions, including several saves by Hardy and a shot that hit the post.
Sahara Gipson recorded Texas Wesleyan's next shot in the 71st minute before Nelson (Texas) tied the match on Lizeth Moreno's goal at 75:32. After Anna Stovall scored at 86:27 to give Nelson (Texas) a 2-1 lead, Texas Wesleyan created two late looks, with Chavez shooting wide and
Addison Hanner forcing a save in the final two minutes, but the Rams finished with a 2-1 loss.
Hardy recorded 15 saves in 90 minutes, making seven in the first half and eight in the second. Vargas scored Texas Wesleyan's goal on her lone shot, which was on frame. Chavez added an assist and two shots. Aguilar collected a defensive save.
The Rams return home this weekend as they take on Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday, October 3 at 1pm at Martin Field.
