FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University Women’s Basketball team (10-1) continued their winning ways as they took a 70-52 home win from NCAA Division III University of New Orleans (0-10) at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday night.
The Lady Privateers caught the Lady Rams off guard and jumped out to an 8-2 advantage with 15:38 left in the first half, but Eliana Mijangos quickly shut the door on New Orleans with two consecutive three’s to tie the game with 14:04 left in the first half. New Orleans took the lead at 9-8, but the Rams quickly regained the lead behind a Mijangos jumper. The Lady Rams promptly went on a 19-2 run to take a 29-13 lead with 4:21 left in the half. Texas Wesleyan kept the throttle on and took a 39-21 halftime lead.
Wesleyan got 16 points off of turnover to the Lady Privateers' four. The Lady Rams also tacked on 13 fast break points compared to New Orleans’ two fast break points.
The Lady Rams went 16-30, shooting 53.3% from the floor for the first half, 28.6% behind the arc, and 71.4% from the free throw line. The Lady Privateers went 9-24, shooting 37.5% from the floor, 33.3% from downtown, and 25% from the charity stripe.
The Lady Privateers came out and played better in the second half; however, the Lady Rams came out and played equally as well and kept the Privateers at bay the entire second half. The Lady Rams led by as many as 26 points when Mijangos hit another three pointer giving Wesleyan a 64-38 lead with 6:26 left in the game. Bre’Untay Reed put in a layup that capped the scoring and gave Texas Wesleyan a 70-52 win.
The Lady Rams shot 47.2% from the floor for the game, 26.7% from the three point line, and 72.7% from the free throw line. The Lady Privateers shot 43.5% from the floor, 30% from behind the arc, and only 42.9% (9-21) from the free throw line.
Tiffany Adair led all players with 18 points. Mijangos had 15 points in the win. Brittany White had 12 points for the Lady Rams.
The Lady Rams take a break to celebrate the holidays, but are back in action again on Thursday, December 30, at 3:00 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Center.
