Fourth Ranked Rams Remain Unbeaten

JACKSON, TN: The fourth ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (11-0) took an impressive 88-57 win at Belhaven University on Saturday.
 
After the Blazers started the scoring with a free throw from Brittion Smith, Jonathan Blake put the Rams ahead with a dunk off a feed from Jeremy Smith. The Rams started the game on a 10-3 run and used a 6-0 run to push ahead 20-9 midway through the period. The Rams led by as many as 19 (30-11) on their way to a 42-24 advantage at the break.
 
Ty Gough posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the first half, while Bryce Hill added 12 points off the TWU bench.
 
Midway through the second half, a three from Hill capped a 10-2 run that put the Rams ahead 67-37. The Rams shot 46% (6-13) from long range in the period and maintained their advantage for the remainder of the contest.
 
For the game the Rams shot 49% from the field and 38% from long range. The Blazers managed just 29% from the field and 16% (3-18) from beyond the arc. The Rams outscored the Blazers 52-30 in the paint and scored 26 points off of 19 Belhaven turnovers.
 
Hill led all scorers with a season-high 27 points while hitting on 5-of-10 three-point attempts. Gough finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Brian Wanamaker added 14 points and six steals to the win. Smith just missed a double-double with eight points and nine assists.
 
Head coach Terry Waldrop commented on the impressive road win. “This was a thorough effort tonight,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop. We guarded and rebounded well. Anytime you can win like this on the road it’s a good sign, but we should continue to improve.”
 
The Rams will return to action on December 30, when they travel to Houston, TX, to take on the University of St. Thomas. They will then jump back into Red River Athletic Conference play with games against the University of the Southwest (Jan. 6) and at Wiley College (Jan. 8) before heading to Shreveport, LA, for a tilt with second ranked LSU-Shreveport on January 10.
