FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (9-11) took a 3-1 (25-18, 28-26, 25-18, 25-14) loss to Southern Nazarene University on Tuesday night at the Sid Richardson Center.
The Lady Rams fell behind early, and could not seem to get back on track against a solid Southern Nazarene team, dropping the first set 25-18.
Texas Wesleyan jumped all over the Crimson Storm in the early goings of the second set, keeping Southern Nazarene on their heels. The Lady Rams kept the pressure on nabbing an 11 point, 21-10 lead. Then the momentum of the game switched dramatically in favor of the Crimson Storm. The Lady Storm went on an 11-1 run to bring the score to 23-21 Ram advantage. The Storm went on to tie the set at 24-24, before both teams struggled to gain advantage. Finally, Wesleyan was able to pull out a 28-26 win.
In the third set the two teams battled in a more evenly competitive set. Wesleyan could not eliminate the runs of points from the Storm offense, but battled hard to stay in the game. The Rams cut the lead down to a 15-12 Southern Nazarene lead with a Meghan Finley kill, but let the third set slip away 25-18.
In the fourth set the two teams fought neck and neck as the game was tied seven times before Southern Nazarene took a 12-8 lead. The Crimson Strom got all the way out to an 19-11 lead before the Lady Rams closed in with a Marissa Rangel kill and an Angelica Arroyo service ace to make it 19-14. The Lady Storm closed out the set though, with a 25-14 fourth set, 3-1 match win.
“I’m not disappointed at all with our performance tonight,” said head coach Christy Clawson. “We battled all night, we fought hard, fought tough. The circumstances could have been better but I’m proud of our performance tonight.”
Alex Hendee led the Lady Rams with 15 kills and 16 digs. Finley finished with 14 kills and two blocks. Arroyo tallied 38 assists in the match.
The Lady Rams will host the University of Texas at Brownsville on Think Pink Day on Friday, October 14. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
