FORT WORTH, TX:  The tenth ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (4-1, 1-0 RRAC) began the Red River Athletic Conference season with a win on Monday.  The Rams bested Jarvis Christian college (1-2, 0-1) 106-83 in the Sid Richardson Center.

The game was tight throughout the first half.  Jarvis Christian pushed out to a 19-9 lead early, but Texas Wesleyan quickly cut the margin to 19-15 with a pair of layups from Jazz Holman and a bucket from Chris Angsomwine.

Late in the period, a three from Brian Talley, gave the Rams a 39-38 advantage.  Jarvis’ Sage Malone answered with a three, but Talley drained another triple and converted a conventional three-point play to bring the score to 45-41.  The Rams went on to lead 46-42 at the intermission.

After shooting just 38.2% in the first half, the Rams came out and shot 55.6% in the second half.  Talley stayed hot and began the second period with another three-pointer.  Talley’s fifth triple of the game later gave the Rams a double-figure advantage at 60-49, prompting a Jarvis Christian timeout.

The Bulldogs cut the deficit all the way down to three points at 62-59, when Ronnie Moss took over.  Moss poured in 13 points during a 24-6 run that put the game away at 86-65.  That run also featured a four-point play from Oscar Griffin.  The Rams went on to lead by as many as 25 points on their way to the 106-83 win.

For the game, the Rams outshot the Bulldogs, 47%-35% from the floor and 40%-29% from distance.  The Rams also held a 56-51 advantage on the boards.

Talley led the Rams with 28 points while hitting 5-of-7 three-point attempts.  Moss finished with 23 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists, while Griffin posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.  Angsomwine added 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Holman finished with 10 points for the Rams.

The Bulldogs were led by Carlton Dean’s 22 points, while Brian Lockett and Marcus O’Key each scored 13.

“We had a multitude of guys step up tonight and get a good win tonight,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop.  “It’s a learning process with this team with eleven new guys.  But this was a team performance and a good win against a Jarvis team that played well.   Brian Talley gave us a great presence on the floor, Oscar Griffin played well, Jazz Holman gave us great minutes, and Chris [Angsomwine] stepped up as well.  We had a lot of guys do some positive things tonight.”

The Rams will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Paul Quinn College in RRAC action.  That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
