FORT WORTH, TX:  Three hurlers combined on a 1-0 shutout as Texas Wesleyan University (1-0) topped Southwestern University (0-1) on opening day of the 2012 baseball season.

Derek Vaughn got the season started right, striking out the first batter of the game, and striking out the side in the first inning.  In the bottom of the first, Taylor Jockers got the sticks started with a single through the right side on the first offering from Southwestern’s Matt Stuart.  Jockers later scored on a groundball from Justin Barnes.

The score remained 1-0 in the seventh inning, when the Pirates threatened with two on and one out.  Ross Meyer lined a shot into the hole at shortstop, but Christian Soberanes made a diving catch and flipped back to second for an inning ending double play.

After Vaughn held the Pirates off the scoreboard for six innings, freshman Blake Ballard handled the seventh and eighth before handing off the 1-0 lead to Nolan Barbee in the ninth.  Barbee worked around a two-out single from Jeff Glasgow to nail down the save.

Vaughn (1-0) tossed 85 pitches while allowing no runs on two hits and striking out five.  Matt Stuart (0-1) took the loss after allowing a run on four hits in five innings of work.

Jordan Fuller collected two of the Rams’ six hits, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Rams will return to action Friday and Saturday when they host Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College in a three-game series.  Friday’s opener is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field.
