Men's Basketball vs. SAGU 1/5/12 Gallery
FORT WORTH, TX: The seventh ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (9-2, 4-1 RRAC) shot a school record 72.3% from the floor en route to a 102-86 Red River Athletic Conference victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (9-2, 3-2) at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday.
The Lions kept the game close for much of the second half, but Texas Wesleyan closed the period on a 14-5 run to take a 52-41 lead into the break.
After shooting 69% from the floor in the first half, the Rams really got going in the second half. After SAGU cut the deficit to 68-61, a three from
Ronnie Moss sparked an 11-2 run to stretch the margin to 16 points. The Lions were unable to mount another charge as the Rams eclipsed the century mark for the second time this season.
Texas Wesleyan shot 76% from the field in the second half and 72.3% (34-47) for the game, topping the previous school record of 71.4% in a win over Oklahoma Christian University in November of 2008. The Rams also hit at a 52.6% clip from long range. Meanwhile SAGU struggled to 8-of-39 (20.5%) from beyond the arc.
The Lions kept things interesting by pulling down 20 offensive rebounds and forcing 24 turnovers. That allowed SAGU to take 82 shots from the field and score 30 points off of turnovers.
“Obviously SAGU is a tremendously improve team,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop. “This was a great home win against a very well coached team. Our ability to get to the free throw line and score inside was big, but we have to get much better defensively to get to the level we want to be.”
Moss led the way with 34 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Eric Frederick added 21 points and 15 rebounds.
Brian Talley added 12 points.
Stephane Mudiay and
Jazz Holman gave the Rams a lift off of the bench. Mudiay finished with 11points in his season debut, while Holman contributed nine points, three rebounds, and seven assists.
SAGU was led by Dominique Rambo’s 34 points, while Ronald Horne finished with 10 points and 10 boards.
The win was the 24th consecutive home court win for the Rams. Texas Wesleyan is now 56-1 in the Sid Richardson Center since January of 2008.
The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Tyler, TX, to take on Texas College. That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
