TYLER, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (10-2, 5-1 RRAC) took an 83-76 win at Texas College (7-6, 3-4) on Saturday.
Thirteen first half turnovers kept the Rams from pulling away early on. Texas Wesleyan led 35-29 with just over a minute to play, but two turnovers in the final minute contributed to a quick 5-0 run. The Steers got a good look at a three at the buzzer, but Phillip Evans was off the mark and the Rams held on to a 35-32 advantage at the break.
The Rams were able to limit the mistakes in the second half, and 12 offensive rebounds led to 16 second chance points. Midway through the period
Ronnie Moss and
Brian Talley each scored four points during an 8-0 run that gave TWU its largest lead of the game at 61-51.
Texas College was able to cut the defecit to four points at 66-62 with 4:05 on the clock, but
Eric Frederick scored on offensive follows on the Rams’ next two possessions to stretch the lead to a more comfortable 70-62. A three from Jamal Robertson made it a two possession game at 75-69 entering the final minute of the game, but Talley knocked down 6-of-7 at the line to hold off the Steers 83-76.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Steers 44%-33% from the field and held a 57-46 margin on the glass. The Rams outscored the Steers 46-26 in the paint and 16-5 on second chance points. TC held a 26-22 edge in fast break points.
Frederick led the Rams with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Talley added 21 points and seven assists, while Moss finished with 20 points and eight boards.
Oscar Griffin pulled down 14 rebounds to go with seven points.
LaDarren Williams led the Steers with 21 points and 20 rebounds. Robertson finished with 25 points as well.
“We are still getting better,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop. “This was a good win on the road. Right now we are second in the conference standings and we get to play number one on Monday. That’s not a bad position to be in.”
The Rams will return to action on Monday, when they travel to San Antonio, TX, to take on RRAC leading Our Lady of the Lake University (10-3, 7-0). That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
