FORT WORTH, Texas- Oscar Griffin led the way for the Texas Wesleyan men’s basketball team Monday night, as the Rams cruised on to their third straight win of the season as they defeated Northwood University 89-77 at the Sid Richardson Center.
Griffin’s hot hand scored a team high 34 points and was 13 of 15 from the free throw line. Griffin also came away with five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in the win.
Jabbar Reid for the Knights started the game off with a three-pointer on an assist by Damarion Austin to give Northwood their first and only lead of the night. A layup by Griffin on an assist by Dallas Jones followed and after a missed three-point shot opportunity by Damarion Austin of the Knights, Griffin would answer from behind the arc to put the Rams ahead.
An assist by Mo Weathers to Griffin for another three put the Rams ahead 18-10 with 13:37 remaining in the first half. A jumper by Reid followed by a steal by JJ Johnson of Northwood, allowed Johnson to sink down a three to help squander the lead. Dallas Jones would respond with a three of his own to extend the score 21-15.
A foul by Brandon Banks would send Griffin to the free throw line as the senior knocked down both baskets. Banks would connect on a layup followed by a three from Reid which pulled Northwood within two at 22-20 with 10:26 left to play in the first half.
The Rams would not let the Knights get any closer in the first half as Texas Wesleyan went into the locker room at halftime with a 53-40 lead.
Missed shot opportunities by both teams would start the second half off. A foul by Jerrick Massenburge sent Jazz Holman to the line as he was able to knock down 1 of 2. A three-pointer by Mo Weathers on an assist by Holman at the 16:07 mark would give the Rams the juice they needed on offense. The Knights were unable to capitalize on turnover opportunities and the Rams went on to win 89-77.
Dallas Jones grabbed 12 total rebounds in the win and notched up 12 points. Mo Weathers was 4 of 4 from the free throw line and picked up 13 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals.
“I am proud of the win tonight but we still have a ton of things to work on,” said Head Coach Brennen Shingleton. “We collectively have to do a better job with the ball and take advantage of opportunities while not gambling on plays. I look forward to getting back to practice because our schedule continues to get tougher after Thanksgiving.”
The Rams will travel to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma over the Thanksgiving break to play in the St. Gregory’s Thanksgiving Classic. The Rams will play St Gregory Friday, November 23
rd at 8:00 pm followed by Science and Arts (OK) the next day with tip-off at 2:00 pm.
