FORT WORTH, Texas—The Texas Wesleyan men’s basketball team played host to Our Lady of the Lake University on Monday night in a 89-71 win over the Saints to an electrified crowd at the Sid Richardson Center.
Oscar Griffin led the way in scoring for the Rams, notching up 20 points and 3 rebounds in the victory.
After a layup by Trent Cox of the Saints to start off the first half, the Rams would go on a 14-2 run to start the first period. The Saints would inch their way back into the game and after two back-to-back three-pointers from senior point guard Robert Martinez and a layup off of a missed three-point shot opportunity by Mike Brown, the Saints were within one at 17-16 with 7:16 remaining in the first.
The Rams extended the score back to double-digits off of a steal by junior Teance Walton who was able to dunk it home and give the Rams a 30-20 lead.
Seandre Sadler was able to knock down a last minute basket before the half off of an assist by Jazz Holman to give the Rams a 13-point lead going into halftime at 39-26.
The Saints were unable to produce enough steam in the second half to cut the lead to single digits.
Jazz Holman brought the crowd to their feet after the junior guard picked up a steal and followed through with a dunk to put the score at 50-37 with 14:19 remaining in the half. Holman had 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. Holman also led the team in assists with 8.
Mo Weathers found Dallas Jones behind the arc as Jones sunk down a three-pointer to bring the score at 76-53 with 6 minutes remaining to play. Weathers had 15 points and 7 rebounds on the night while Jones came away with 14 points and 2 rebounds.
Chris Angsomwine was able to give the Rams a 25-point lead shortly after off an assist by Holman with the score at 78-53.
The Rams were able to finish off the Saints with a 89-71 victory. The Rams improve to 7-1 on the season.
“I am very proud of our guys tonight,” said head coach Brennen Shingleton. “This was our third game in five days. This might have been one of the better team defensive efforts I have been a part of. We have had a long week with classes coming to an end and a tough schedule. I am really proud of our leadership tonight in front of a great crowd. Free-throws and executing was the difference in the game tonight. “
The Rams shot 27-31 from the free-throw line compared to 12-18 by the Saints.
The Rams will play their next game on the road as the team will visit Jarvis Christian on Saturday, December 8
th. The game is slated to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
