FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (6-1) took game one of the conference opener against the University of the Southwest (2-6) 9-4 at La Grave on Friday.

The Rams took two on the Mustangs in the first inning when Jake Howeth and Taylor Jockers led off with a single and double respectively. Alex Padilla drove a shot into left for a two RBI single to give the Rams a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Joseph Lassiter led off the second inning with a single, and Howeth blooped another single to center with two outs to put runners in scoring position for Christian Soberanes. Soberanes fired a two RBI single into left field with the bases loaded to push the lead to 4-0.

The Mustangs found the gaps in the fifth inning with a trio of consecutive extra base hits. Carlos Rodriguez put a double into right center, before Micah Martinez drove a RBI triple to left center. Omar Villar followed suit with a RBI double to left center that cut the score to a 4-2 Ram lead.

Texas Wesleyan put another crooked number up in the sixth inning when Jordan Fuller came through with a two RBI double into the left center gap, and Hunter Robinson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to deep left to make it a 7-2 ball game.

The Mustangs got a couple back in the eighth inning, when Darelle Owens and Joshua Capello hit a single behind him. On what appeared to be a botched double steal, Capello was caught in a sure out run down before a Rams throwing error scored Owens and landed Capello on third. A pass ball on the next pitch allowed Capello to cross the plate to cut the lead to 7-4 going to the bottom of the eighth.

Robinson struck again with a two RBI line drive single to center field to give the Rams a 9-4 cushion heading to the final inning.

Southwest left the bases loaded in the ninth to concede to the Rams 9-4.

Soberanes went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Robinson went 1 for 4 with 3 RBI. Fuller went 2 for 5 driving in two runs.

Derek Vaughn (2-0) picked up the win. He tossed six complete innings, gave up two runs on four hits, walked one, and had nine strikeouts.

The Rams continue the series with the Mustangs tomorrow in a double header at La Grave Field starting at noon.
