FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (8-1, 3-0 RRAC) completed the sweep of the University of the Southwest at La Grave Field on Saturday. The Rams won game one 5-1, before taking game two 5-1.
The Rams once again put up numbers in the first inning. Christian Soberanes singled through the left side to drive in a run. Joseph Lassiter put another run across with a sacrifice fly to right field, and Hunter Robinson kept things going with a RBI single to the shortstop to make it a 3-0 game right off the bat.
The Rams ended a three inning drought that started with Taylor Jockers reaching base on an error. Soberanes shot one down the left field line for a double. Jordan Fuller sliced the ball into shallow center for a two RBI single to bring the score to a 5-0 Ram lead.
The Mustangs got on the board in the seventh when Darelle Owens singled and made his way to third base to score on a double play to make it 5-1. That was all Southwest would get as the Rams took game two 5-1.
Fuller went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI. Soberanes went 2 for 3 with an RBI
Tyler King (1-0) got the win. He tossed six complete innings gave up one run on four hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts.
In the second game of the double header, the Rams made the first dent in the score with a manufactured run in the second inning. Padilla, Fuller and Lassiter all singled to load the bases. Travis Shuck grounded into a fielder’s choice, giving time for the pinch runner Glen Morrison to cross the plate for a 1-0 Wesleyan lead.
Rams put another across in the third inning with a Jockers sacrifice fly to center that scored Jake Howeth from third base to make it a 2-0 advantage.
Schuck made it a 3-0 game in the fourth with a RBI single to left center. The Rams pushed another across after Schuck scored on a first and third play to give Wesleyan a 4-0 cushion.
Texas Wesleyan added on to the lead in the fifth with a Padilla sacrifice fly to center to make it a 5-0 game.
Southwest cracked into the lead in the sixth with a Martin Adams RBI single to shallow left field to end the shutout.
That was all that the Mustangs would get as the Rams finish the sweep in a 5-1 victory.
Dillon Wilson (2-0) picked up the win, he tossed 5.1 innings, gave up one run on two hits, with three walks and six strikeouts.
Schuck went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI in game two. Lassiter and Fuller both went 2 for 3 in the win.
The Rams will continue their home stand on Tuesday, February, 14. They will take on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor starting at 2:00 p.m.
