FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (9-1) scored all four of their runs in the sixth inning to notch a 4-0 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (3-2) at LaGrave Field on Tuesday.
Chris Pearson faced the minimum nine batters on his first trip through the UMHB batting order.
Alex Padilla erased a single in the second inning by throwing out Braden Embry trying to steal second and Pearson induced an inning ending double play grounder after Justin Gregory led off the second with a base hit.
Meanwhile, UMHB’s Danny Horstman kept pace by allowing just two singles and a walk while benefitting from two double plays through three innings.
The game remained scoreless into the sixth inning. With one out in the bottom of the frame,
Christian Soberanes was hit by a pitch to load the bases after Texas Wesleyan got singles from
Justin Barnes and
Taylor Jockers. Three consecutive walks to Padilla,
Vincent Winter, and
Joseph Lassiter got the Rams on the board.
Tyler King followed with an RBI single and the Rams jumped out to a 4-0 advantage.
Mary Hardin-Baylor never mounted a serious threat, advancing a runner as far as second base on only two occasions.
Five Texas Wesleyan hurlers combined on the shutout.
Patrick Stanley (1-0) picked up the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief work. Pearson received no decision after allowing four hits and striking out three in five innings pitched.
Chase Daniels (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on two hits and three walks in 1.1 innings.
The Rams will return to action with a three-game RRAC series at UT-Brownsville Friday and Saturday. Friday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start with Saturday’s finale scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
