FORT WORTH, TX: The 12th ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (21-5, 16-4 RRAC) took a 79-71 win over Texas College (16-10, 12-8) at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
The win marked the 104th victory of
Ryan Glanzer's career. That makes the senior forward out of Carrollton, TX, the winningest player in the 75 years of Texas Wesleyan Men’s Basketball. Glanzer surpassed
Cody Waldrop's record of 103 set just last year.
The win also sets up an important meeting with Our Lady of the Lake University on Monday. The Rams currently trail the Saints and LSU-Shreveport by just one game in the loss column as they vie for a fifth consecutive Red River Athletic Conference regular season championship.
In the fourth and final game without the aid of
Ronnie Moss, the Rams found themselves in a tough spot early on as
Eric Frederick picked up two early fouls and saw just eight minutes of action in the first period.
Oscar Griffin picked up the slack, knocking down two early threes and three triples in the period. That kept the Steers from jumping ahead. Meanwhile, the Rams' defense held the Steers to just 29% shooting in the frame, and Texas Wesleyan led for the majority of the half. An offensive stick-back from LaDarren Williams gave Texas College a 35-33 lead with 26 seconds to play, but
Jazz Holman closed the period with a layup to send the teams to the locker room tied at 35.
In the second half, a dunk from Williams gave the Steers their final lead of the contest at 50-49 with 10:58 on the clock. Holman answered with a three point play and
Brian Talley nailed two three’s as the Rams scored 11 unanswered points to lead 60-50.
Texas Wesleyan stretched the lead to 13 points at 64-51, but the Steers scored eight straight points to close the gap to 64-59. With 4:05 to play, the Scorpions got a huge break as Frederick picked up his fifth foul and Jamal Robertson hit a pair of free throws to make it a single possession contest (64-61) with two of the nation’s top-five scorers out of the picture.
From that point the Rams hit 11-of-12 shots from the free throw line to hold off the Steers. With 29 seconds to play,
Stephane Mudiay came up with an offensive put-back to push the score to 75-69. Eleven seconds later Mudiay hit two at the line to basically ice the contest at 77-71. Talley hit two free throws with 12 seconds to play to cap the scoring at 79-71.
“This was a huge win to get the season sweep over a good team,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop. “Our bench stepped up great.
Tyler Sears,
Chris Angsomwine,
Ryan Glanzer, and
Stephane Mudiay all gave us big boost.”
Texas Wesleyan’s bench outscored TC’s reserves 20-7 for the game. The Rams outshot the Steers 48%-36% and led the rebounding battle 39-33.
Five Rams reached double-figures in scoring as eight rams saw at least 15 minutes of action. Frederick led the way with 17 points, while Griffin finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Holman added 13 points, Mudiay 12, and Talley 11.
Robertson led the Steers with 28 points, while Williams added 21 points and 11 boards.
The Rams are back in action on Monday, as they host Our Lady of the Lake. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
