VICTORIA, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (21-6) swept a doubleheader at the University of Houston-Victoria (4-12) on Tuesday. The Rams won with scores of 10-6 and 8-4.
In game one, an RBI single from
Alex Padilla and a two-run double from
Brian White staked the Rams to a 3-0 lead in the first. However, the Jaguars came right back with a two-run triple from Tyler Steiner in the bottom of the first.
Christian Soberanes added an RBI single in the second. In the fourth, the Rams took control of the contest with three runs on two singles from
Jake Howeth and
Taylor Jockers and a double from Soberanes.
The Jaguars turned a leadoff walk to Steiner into a run in the fifth bringing the score to 7-3.
In the top of the sixth, the Rams put up three more runs with a two-run triple off the bat of
Joseph Lassiter and an RBI single from White. The Jaguars loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second, but
Jacob Lyons notched back-to-back strikeouts before an error allowed an unearned run to cross the plate.
Matt Telesko recorded the final out of the inning to hold the score at 10-4.
UHV plated two runs in the seventh before
Patrick Stanley came on to nail down the final out for his third save of the year. Lyons (4-0) earned the win after allowing four runs, two earned, on nine hits while striking out seven in 5.2 innings of work. Cory Carter (2-4) took the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits in 4.2 innings.
Soberanes led the Rams’ 15-hit attack by going 4-for-5 with a double, RBI, and three runs scored. Padilla, White, and Howeth each had a pair of hits as well.
In game two, Jockers ripped the first pitch for a double into right-centerfield and later scored on a sac fly from Padilla. A home run from White and an RBI single from Soberanes in the second pushed the score to 3-0. The Rams then added two more runs with a leadoff homer from Padilla and an RBI double from
Jordan Fuller in the third.
UHV got a run back in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a pair of errors to score an unearned tally. The Jaguars cut the score to 5-3 in the fourth with runs on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch.
In the fifth, the Rams struck again. Fuller reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on a single from Howeth. Howeth then stole second and scored on a base hit from
Vincent Winter, giving the rams a four-run cushion at 7-3.
Texas Wesleyan added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI double from
Stephen Niedwiecki. The Jaguars got that run back in the bottom of the seventh, but their rally fell well short at 8-4.
Blake Ballard (2-2) worked four innings allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits in the win. Stanley nailed down his second save of the day with 1.2 innings of relief, allowing a run on two hits. Tanner Hamilton (1-1) allowed five runs on seven hits in three innings in the loss for UHV.
Padilla went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in the win. Niedwiecki added a pair of hits as the Rams outhit the Jaguars 11-9.
The Rams will return to action on Wednesday when they host Texas Lutheran University. Game one of that doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field.
