FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (22-7) settled for a split against Texas Lutheran University (11-7) at La Grave Field on Wednesday. The Rams lost a 9-0 game one before coming back and taking game two 2-1 in extra innings.
The Bulldogs struck first with a four run, second inning. Tyler Carollo led off the inning with a single up the middle. Von Wendel got a hit through the left side on a hit and run play. The third consecutive hit of the inning was a two RBI double by Royce Rodriguez. The next was a home run over the left field wall courtesy of the nine-hole Brian Wheaton, and on four hits the Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead.
Matt Peterson and Evan Curtis extended the lead in the fifth inning with a pair of RBI hits. Peterson knocked in two runs with a single up the middle, and Curtis put an RBI double down the left field line to make it a 7-0 game.
Texas Lutheran picked up two more runs in the sixth to take a 9-0 win in game one as the Rams could not make any head way, taking their second shutout loss of the season.
Jake Howeth went 2 for 3 in the loss, and Justin Barnes and Jordan Fuller both went 1 for 3 in game one.
In game two, the two teams battled out a scoreless tie through four innings. Things started to pick up for the bulldogs in the top of the fifth inning when a couple of singles put runners on the corners. Tony Gennusa was able to loft a fly ball deep enough into left field for a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
The Rams tied the game in the sixth inning with a Christian Soberanes RBI single into left field to make it 1-1.
The two teams took the 1-1 tie into extra innings, but a walk off single by Alex Padilla sent the Rams over the top with a 2-1 win in eight innings.
Padilla went 2 for 4 in game two. Soberanes went 1 for 2 with a RBI.
The Rams will continue their home stand with a RRAC series against Texas College on Friday and Saturday. That series gets started at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at La Grave Field.
