FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (22-8, 8-4 RRAC) suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of Texas College (12-15-1, 5-6-1) and right-hander Aldo Montoya in game one of a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series on Friday.
The Steers took the lead in the third inning, manufacturing a pair of runs with an infield RBI single from Tristen Neal and a suicide squeeze from Kasey Vogel. Meanwhile TC’s Aldo Montoya breezed through the first three innings, allowing just a second inning walk while facing only ten hitters.
The Rams got a rally together in the fourth, putting two on with one out after singles from
Christian Soberanes and
Alex Padilla. However, Montoya was up to the task, avoiding damage with a groundball and a strikeout.
Nolan Barbee came on in relief for the Rams in the fifth inning and was nearly unhittable, allowing one hit and striking out five in five scoreless innings.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Taylor Jockers led off and ripped a ball by a diving Vogel at first base and off of a diving second baseman, Corey Heidebrect. The ball bounded down the left field line and Jockers hustled into second for a double. Soberanes followed with a walk and
Justin Barnes laid down a sac bunt to put the tying run into scoring position. The Steers elected to intentionally walk Padilla, and Montoya got
Joseph Lassiter to fly out to shallow centerfield and
Brian White to lineout to shortstop preserving the shutout.
Montoya (3-3) allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four. He needed just 97 pitches in the complete game effort.
Tyler King (3-2) allowed two runs on two hits in four innings.
Padilla went 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss.
The Rams and Steers will complete their RRAC series with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field.
