FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (23-9, 9-5 RRAC) split a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader with Texas College (13-16-1, 6-7-1) at LaGrave Field on Saturday.  The Steers took game one 4-3, while the Rams prevailed 3-0 in game two.

In game one, the Rams broke the ice in the second inning when Alex Padilla hooked a home run just inside the leftfield foul pole.

The Steers answered right back in the top of the third.  With two down, DJ Fisher hit a ball back up the middle just out of Derek Vaughn's reach for a two-run single.  In the bottom of the inning, the Rams loaded the bases with no outs and tied the game with an RBI grounder from Justin Barnes.

Texas College loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth after a hit batter, a single, and a walk.  The Steers took the lead when Matt McEuen scampered home on a wild pitch before Vaughn could get out of the inning.

Christian Soberanes led off the bottom of the sixth with a ringing double to left.  Barnes followed with a single up the middle that tied the game at 3-3.

In the seventh, TC got a leadoff single from Kasey Vogel and pushed the go-ahead run to third base with one out for Jose Serna.  Serna lifted a fly to right deep enough for Vogel to tag, but Jake Howeth fired a strike to the plate to end the inning.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Rams could not capitalize on a leadoff single from Joseph Lassiter, and what was scheduled to be a seven inning game became a nine inning contest.

The Steers took advantage of a Wesleyan error in the eighth to push ahead 4-3.

Chris Blackmon (4-3) was able to make that run stand up, using 106 pitches in a complete game effort.  Balckmon allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out seven.  Patrick Stanley (1-1) took the loss after allowing an unearned run on one hit in three innings of relief work.

Padilla went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, while Barnes went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI.

In game two, Texas Wesleyan’s Dillon Wilson and Texas College’s David Kipp battled pitch for pitch, each allowing just one hit through the first five innings.

With two outs in the sixth, the Rams finally got some timely hitting.  Trent Sewell started the rally with the first of four consecutive singles.  Howeth, Soberanes, and Andrew Coleman each added base knocks as the Rams plated three runs to break the scoreless tie.

Wilson (4-0) tossed 80 pitches in seven shutout innings.  He allowed just two hits and struck out eight.  Kipp (1-3) allowed three runs on five hits while striking out three in six innings pitched.

Texas College took the series two games to one with some impressive starting pitching.  The Steers never used a relief pitcher while recording 37 fly ball outs and 16 ground ball outs.

The Rams will return to action on Tuesday when they host Tarleton State University.  That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field.
