Rams Take Two of Three at Bacone

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MUSKOGEE, OK:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (28-12, 14-6 RRAC) split a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bacone College (21-14, 11-7) to take the series two games to one.  The Rams took game one on Saturday 8-5 before the Warriors took the nightcap 5-4.

In game one on Saturday, the Warriors took advantage of a pair of Texas Wesleyan errors to score two runs in the first inning.  However, the Rams came right back with a big inning in the second.  A Bacone miscue allowed one run to score and extended the inning for an RBI single from Christian Soberanes and a two-run double from Justin Barnes.

Bacone got a double from Lester Gonzalez and an RBI single from Will Simms to cut the score to 4-3 in the bottom of the second.

Texas Wesleyan added an RBI double from Stephen Niedwiecki and an RBI groundout from Jake Howeth in the third inning, and an RBI single from Joseph Lassiter in the fourth to push ahead 7-3.  Freshman Joel Horton's first collegiate home run, a solo shot in the sixth, capped Texas Wesleyan’s scoring.

Bacone got single tallies in the sixth and seventh, but it was too little too late as the Rams came away with an 8-5 win.

Nolan Barbee (5-1), who saw action in three of the Rams’ four games this week, earned the start and picked up the win after allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits in six innings pitched.  Jesse Fish (2-3) took the loss after allowing eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits in six innings.

Horton went 3-for-4 at the plate while Barnes and Lassiter each had a pair of Texas Wesleyan’s 12 hits.

In game two, the Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead with an RBI triple from Casey Gillespie in the first and two unearned runs in the third.

The Rams got on the board in the fourth when Barnes ripped a leadoff double and later scored on a Bacone error.  The Warriors manufactured a run in the fifth to regain their three-run margin.

Texas Wesleyan mounted a comeback in the seventh.  Brian White led off with a double and Howeth followed with an RBI single.  Two batters later, Howeth scored on a groundball from Soberanes.  The Warriors then intentionally walked Barnes and Alex Padilla tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single.

In the eighth, Bacone put runners at second and third with one out.  The Rams were able to retire one, but Gillespie scampered home on a wild pitch with what proved to be the game-winning run.

Cody McBride (4-1) picked up the win with three innings of relief work.  McBride allowed two runs on two hits while striking out two.  Jacob Lyons (4-2) took the loss after allowing a run on two hits in one inning pitched.

Seven different Rams collected hits in the loss, led by Taylor Jockers' 2-for-5 day at the plate.

The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Oklahoma City, OK, to take on Oklahoma Christian University.  That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
