FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (17-6) scored six runs in the fourth inning to rally for a 6-3 win over the University of Dallas (11-5) at LaGrave Field on Wednesday.
Each of the first six Crusader batters reached safely as UDAL grabbed a 3-0 lead with an RBI single from Andrew Bossert and a two-run single from Nico Caluda.
Blake Ballard came on in relief for the Rams and limited the damage. Ballard needed just three pitches to get an inning-ending double-play grounder.
Six Texas Wesleyan hurlers combined to keep the Crusaders off the scoreboard for the final 8.2 innings.
The Rams loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first, but Chris Schierhorn fielded a hot comebacker off the bat of
Hunter Robinson for the final out.
In the fourth, the Rams loaded the bases with two outs once again. This time Dallas shortstop Jacob Ford couldn’t handle a liner from
Jake Howeth. That let one run in and allowed the inning to continue for
Taylor Jockers. Jockers ripped a two-run single into left-center and
Christian Soberanes followed with an RBI single that gave the Rams a 4-3 lead. For good measure
Justin Barnes drilled a double up against the right field wall to plate two more Wesleyan runs. In total, the Rams sent ten men to the plate and scored six runs on five hits, a hit batter, and an error.
Ballard (1-2) a freshman out of Joshua, TX, picked up his first collegiate win with 3.2 innings of relief work. He allowed five hits and a walk while striking out one.
Patrick Stanley nailed down his second save in as many days by working a scoreless ninth inning.
Jockers set the table to the tune of a 3-for-4 day for the Rams. He drove in two and scored a run as well.
The Rams will return to action in a Red River Athletic Conference series at Huston-Tillotson University Friday and Saturday. Friday’s opener is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start with Saturday’s doubleheader set to begin at 12:00 p.m. in Austin, TX.
