DALLAS, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (32-14) swept a doubleheader at Dallas Christian College on Wednesday. The Rams won with scores of 9-2 and 1-0.
A TWU error proved costly in the first inning of game one. With the bases loaded and one out, Dustin Tarpley grounded a two-run single through the right side.
With one out in the top of the third,
Taylor Jockers laced a triple down the right field line.
Christian Soberanes followed with a ground ball that plated Jockers. With one out in the fourth inning,
Stephen Niedwiecki blasted a three-run homer to straight-away centerfield that put the Rams on top 4-2.
The following inning, the Rams loaded the bases with one out. After a bases-loaded walk to Jockers,
Justin Barnes clubbed a grand slam home run that nearly cleared the trees beyond the right field fence. That bomb capped the scoring at 9-2.
Chris Pearson (2-4) picked up the win after allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out four in six innings pitched. Logan Bell took the loss after surrendering four runs on six hits in five innings of work.
Jockers, Barnes, and
Joseph Lassiter all went 2-for-3 at the plate while the Rams outhit the Crusaders 8-6.
Game two featured a pair of lefties in TWU’s
Nathan Barker and DCC’s Zach Diaz. The two combined to keep the game scoreless through four innings.
In the top of the fifth, singles from Soberanes and Jockers put runners at the corners with one out. With two down in the frame,
Jake Howeth delivered an RBI single to right to account for the only run of the game.
The Crusaders put the tying run at third base in the bottom of the seventh, but
Alex Padilla picked Elijah May off for the final out of the game.
Barker (1-0),
Nolan Barbee, and
Patrick Stanley combined on the five-hit shutout for the Rams. Barker allowed two hits while striking out five in four innings pitched. Stanley locked down his ninth save of the season with a scoreless seventh.
Howeth went 2-for-4 at the plate in the game-two win.
The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host the University of Houston-Victoria. Game one of that doubleheader is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
