Pilots Eliminate Rams in Slugfest

Box Score

SHREVEPORT, LA:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (33-21) was eliminated at the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday after suffering a 16-8 loss at the hands of the nation’s top-ranked team and tournament host, LSU-Shreveport (46-4).

Although Texas Wesleyan outscored LSU-Shreveport 5-3 over the last four innings, it was not enough to overcome the high-powered Pilot offense.

Jake Howeth gave the Rams a brief lead with a solo home run in the top of the first.  The Pilots came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first including an RBI triple from Kyle Pearson.

Shreveport added five in the second and two in the third to jump out to a 9-2 advantage.

The Rams got on the board again in the fourth with a two-run triple off the bat of Taylor Jockers.

The Pilots put up four runs in the fifth, including a two-run homer from Devin Greco to take a commanding 13-3 lead.  The Rams continued to chip away, adding a double from Justin Barnes and an RBI single from Joseph Lassiter in the sixth, but LSUS score two more in the bottom of the frame.

In the seventh, the Rams notched four runs.  The rally included Cody McGee's first collegiate home run, a two-run shot.  An RBI double from Reed Lavallee in the bottom of the eighth capped the scoring at 16-8.

Jared Mortenson (10-1) earned the win after allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings pitched.  Dillon Wilson (6-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs, four earned on six hits in two innings of work.

Barnes went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the loss.  Howeth and Jockers each had two of Texas Wesleyan’s 12 hits as well.

The loss ends Texas Wesleyan’s season at 33-21 overall.  The season marked the program’s eighth consecutive season of at least 30 wins.
