FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (28-13, 14-7 RRAC) suffered a 3-0 loss in game one of a three-game set with Northwood University (20-12-1, 10-5-1) on Thursday.
The Knights struck first when Teddy Nowell led off the game with a soft single to left. Nowell moved to second on a wild pitch before Edwin Arroyo laid down a sac bunt. With two outs in the inning, Nowell scampered home on a second wild pitch, and Northwood took a quick 1-0 lead.
The Rams put runners in scoring position in the first, second, and third innings, but Northwood’s Roman Gomez was able to avoid any damage on the scoreboard.
Austin Atwell led off the top of the seventh and lined a home run down the leftfield line, and the Knights added an RBI single from Elvin Rodriguez in the ninth to push the score to 3-0.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Christian Soberanes drew a leadoff walk to chase Gomez from the contest.
Justin Barnes followed with an infield single to bring the tying run to the plate. However, Bryan Kinard retired the next three hitters in a row to record his second save of the season.
Gomez and TWU’s
Tyler King matched each other pitch for pitch. King (4-3) was the tough luck loser after allowing two runs on five hits while tossing 80 pitches in eight innings of work. Gomez (2-1) allowed just three hits using 92 pitches to work through 8+ innings.
Both teams stranded four base runners. Texas Wesleyan was the beneficiary of two double plays.
Jake Howeth went 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss.
The two teams will face each other Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Those games will be played in Cedar Hill, TX.
