Rams Drop Close Battle to Texas College, 64-62

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan men’s basketball team fell to Texas College (16-6, 10-5 RRAC) 64-62, in a close conference battle inside the Sid Richardson Center on Monday night. Oscar Griffin posted his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
 
The Rams (13-9, 7-8 RRAC) leapt out to an 8-1 lead within the opening minutes in the first half. Bryan Werner connected on a layup to give Texas Wesleyan a double-digit lead at 20-10 with 11:20 remaining in the first period. Werner came away with 10 points and six rebounds.
 
The Steers cut the deficit to five at 26-21 with 4:51 remaining before halftime, but they would not inch any closer as the Rams went on a 12-5 run to extend the lead back to double-digits at 38-26 to enter the half.
 
The Rams shot 41.7 percent from the field and were 6-6 from the free-throw line in the first half. Texas Wesleyan out-rebounded the Steers 25-6.
 
Griffin hit the first two baskets of the second half for the Rams, both coming from an assist by Mo Weathers. Weathers leads the Rams in the assists and rebounding columns for the season and picked up three assists and 10 rebounds in the game.
 
The Steers went on a 14-4 run to tie the game at 46-46 with 10:45 remaining in the second half. Shortly after Hakeem Poles hit from beyond the arc to give the Steers their first lead of the game at 49-48 with 10:09 to play.
 
Both teams battled back and forth all the way down to the wire. With seven seconds on the clock, Teance Walton put up a shot in an attempt to tie the game but a block by Glen Williams forced the ball out of bounds leaving 0.4 seconds on the clock. Walton was one point shy from a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds in the game.
 
The loss marks the first time the Rams have lost four straight games since 2005.
 
The Rams will travel to play SAGU (19-3, 13-2 RRAC) on Saturday, February 2nd. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
