CEDAR HILL, Texas--Oscar Griffin led the way with 21 points as the Rams (10-4, 5-3 RRAC) edged away with a road victory on Thursday night, defeating Northwood 67-61. The Knights held the Rams to their lowest scoring game of the season.
“I thought this was a really gutsy effort,” said head coach Brennen Shingleton. “We did not shoot the ball well but we showed a lot of toughness on the road.”
Junior forward Bryan Werner posted his second-highest scoring performance of the season with 14 points. Werner also grabbed 4 rebounds in the win.
After battling in the opening minutes of the first half, the Rams fell behind 7 points before springing out on a 21-3 run, to go into halftime with an 11-point advantage at 32-21.
The Rams had their largest lead of the night, ahead by 13 points after a layup by Chris Angsomwine in the opening minute of the second half. The offense stalled for Texas Wesleyan in the next few possessions as Northwood sparked off on a 21-0 run. The Knights had their largest lead of the night at 42-34 with less than 12 minutes remaining.
The Rams found some steam to answer back and a three-pointer from Mo Weathers tied the game at 42. Weathers added 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.
With a one point difference that had the Rams ahead at the 2:40 mark, Griffin took over sinking back-to-back buckets to push the lead out to five with 1:30 remaining. Free-throw shots would seal the victory for Texas Wesleyan as Brian Talley and Weathers sunk down their opportunities at the line to help the Rams squeeze out with a win.
“I am really proud of the process of how we are growing as a team,” said Shingleton. “Our guys are starting to understand how important it is to be accountable in their positions and roles. We are coming off of Christmas break and we had a really tough week of practice. I am pleased we won and look forward to getting back to work.”
