SILOAM SPRINGS, AR: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (14-16, 6-5 SAC) dropped a 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-13) nail biter on the road against John Brown University (12-16, 6-5 SAC) at the Bill George Arena on Friday.
The Golden Eagles were ready to play as John Brown stuck close with the Lady Rams early in the first set as a
Courtney Shirey and
Meghan Finley block kept the game locked at 11-11. John Brown took a small 3-0 run from there to make it 14-11. The Golden Eagles started the match with seven kills and three errors hitting .154, while Wesleyan only managed four kills and four errors. The Lady Rams fought back to take a 25-21 win with help from
Katherine Rosenbusch posting three kills and a
Stephanie Dominguez service ace late in the set.
The second set was another tight one as neither team enjoyed a sizeable lead, but the Lady Rams held the edge throughout. Rosenbusch tallied five kills in the set and
Abigail Zipoy notched four. Another Dominguez ace to start the set kept JBU playing from behind for most of the set. The Golden Eagles challenged the Rams, but Wesleyan sealed the 25-23 second set win.
A Zipoy and Rosenbusch block gave the Lady Rams a slight 4-3 lead to start the third set. The Lady Rams defense played stout, after another Rosenbusch and
Starnisha Bodie block made it an 8-3 lead.
Lauren Hamaker picked up her second ace of the night to make 9-4 Rams. John Brown took a 4-0 run after a few Wesleyan errors to tie the game at 11-11, but an
Alex Hendee kill put the Rams back on top 13-12. The Golden Eagles kept their foot on the gas erasing the Rams lead again, on the way to another 4-0 run for a 16-13 lead. Molli Pugh gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the night with her eighth kill of the match to make it 20-16. A Wesleyan setting error called by the referee gave JBU set point at 24-19, before Zipoy fired off a kill to make it 24-21. Wesleyan went on a 4-0 run with John Brown sitting on set point, but finally the Golden Eagles were able to slip past to force a fourth set.
The Golden Eagles had all the momentum at the start of the fourth set, taking a 9-0 run capped by Becca Young ace for a 9-1 lead. Wesleyan had five errors over that span. The Lady Rams had too much ground to make up as John Brown kept Wesleyan off balance for the entire set. The Rams made a 4-0 run facing set point again, but the Golden Eagles took a 25-17 win to force a fifth game after falling behind two sets.
Texas Wesleyan grabbed a 4-1 lead to start the final set capped by a Hendee kill from Dominguez. Texas Wesleyan tried to hang on to the lead, but John Brown would not go away easily. The Golden Eagles tied the game at 10-10, before the Lady Rams took a 3-0 run capped by a Zipoy Kill from Hamaker for a 13-10 lead. Again, John Brown was determined to take the match with a game tying kill by Erin McIroy from Kailey Bain to knot things up at 13-13. The Golden Eagles got two more points to cap a 5-0 run to complete the comeback with a 15-13 fifth set, 3-2 match win.
The Golden Eagles finished the match with 22 kills and only three attacking errors over the last two sets that made the difference in securing the comeback. John Brown hit .189 as a team to the Lady Rams .108 mark. John Brown also compiled 15 team blocks to the Rams nine.
Zipoy led all players in a terrific game as she racked 17 kills behind 17 digs with two blocks and an ace. Hendee finished with 11 kills and 14 digs. Rosenbusch had a very uncharacteristically less efficient night, but still notched 10 kills, three blocks, and two aces. Dominguez notched a double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs, adding three aces in the effort. Hamaker was the fourth Lady Ram with a double-double on 20 assists and 15 digs.
Lauren Hutchinson had a career high 30 kills in the loss.
The Lady Rams will make the drive to Oklahoma City, OK for a match against Oklahoma City University on Saturday, October 26 starting at 5:00 pm. Texas Wesleyan took a 3-1 home win over the Stars on September, 28.
