FORT WORTH, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan men's basketball team celebrated homecoming with a victory over Langston University (10-15, 6-11 RRAC), 81-71 inside the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday afternoon.
Oscar Griffin posted his third double-double of the season with 26 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Griffin shot 9-12 from the free-throw line and also came away with two assists and two blocks in the game.
The Rams (15-11, 8-10 RRAC) were in attack mode from the opening tip-off and never trailed for the length of the game. After leaping out to a 9-2 lead, the Lions responded by forcing a 7-0 run to tie the game at the 15:28 mark in the first half. Shortly after,
Mo Weathers sunk a three-pointer to push the lead out again for the Rams. Weathers led the team in assists with eight and also picked up 10 points and six rebounds in the win.
Griffin hit from beyond the arc off of an assist from
Teance Walton to give the Rams their first double-digit lead of the game at 24-13 with 10:15 to play before the half. Walton came away with eight points and seven rebounds.
The Rams held their largest lead of the game, ahead 20-points at 46-26 with less than two minutes remaining before halftime. Joey Atkinson for the Lions drained a long three to shorten the deficit and then came up with a steal, which led to a Bayshon Payne three-pointer to cut the deficit down to 14 points, at 46-32 to enter halftime.
The Rams led in double-digits for majority of the second period, with their biggest lead in the second half coming after
Brian Talley hit two free-throws to give the Rams a 17-point advantage at 77-60. Talley had 13 points in the contest.
Dallas Jones racked up another double-digit scoring night with 12 points. Teance Walton had eight points and seven rebounds.
The Rams shot 47.2 percent from the field and 61.4 percent from behind the free-throw line.
"We are making strides, our focus has to get better, the attention to detail is a must and I'm really proud of the fact that we can preserve," said head coach Brennen Shingleton. "I love our team and I am excited about the next couple of weeks."
The Rams will host Bacone College (3-19, 1-14 RRAC) on Monday, February 11 at the Sid Richardson Center. The game will be a "pink out" in honor of cancer awareness. Tip-off is set at 7:30 p.m.
