FORT WORTH, TX: The 20th ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (1-0) took a win on Opening Day for the fourth consecutive season. The Rams topped Jarvis Christian College (0-1) 7-2 at LaGrave Field on Friday.
Mitch McLeod worked around a leadoff double in the first inning, stranding Ernie Aguilera at first base with no harm done.
Tommy Muhlethaler led off the second with a double and later scored on a sac fly from Shaquille Thomas to give the Bulldogs the first run of the game.
In the bottom of the second,
Dakota Lee delivered the first Texas Wesleyan hit of the season, a rifling line drive single into left-center.
Jose Martinez followed with an RBI double. A single from
Joel Rickman moved Martinez to third base, and
Quavian Lawson pushed across the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
The Bulldogs left runners at second and third in the top of the third inning. In the fourth, JCC tied the game with an RBI single from Shaquille Thomas.
In the sixth,
Jake Howeth greeted new Bulldog pitcher Max Arnonds with a ringing leadoff double down the left field line. Two batters later
Tyler Kamtz gave the Rams the lead with an RBI single. Martinez brought Kamtz in from second with a single to right to push the score to 4-2.
Lawson was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh. He stole second and scored on a single from Howeth. After a single from
Manny Sanchez, Kamtz delivered a two-run double to open the game up at 7-2.
McLeod (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings of work. He struck out four while walking none.
Connor Zamora and
Avery Sullivan combined on two innings of scoreless relief.
Arnonds (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in an inning of work.
Howeth set the tone at the top of the TWU batting order, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Kamtz added two hits and three RBI to the win, while Martinez went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
The Rams and Bulldogs will complete a three-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at Sycamore Park.
