Rams Take Series from Bulldogs

FORT WORTH, TX:  With game time temperatures 30 degrees cooler than Friday, the 20th ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (2-1) split a doubleheader with Jarvis Christian College (1-2) at Sycamore Park on Saturday.  The Rams took a 6-4 win in game one before the Bulldogs plated three runs in the seventh to prevail 5-4 in game two.
 
In game one, Sam Martin worked around a leadoff walk in the third.  In the bottom of the inning, Jake Davis ripped a leadoff single.  Anthony Samuel, running for Davis, later scored on a sacrifice fly from Manny Sanchez.
 
Dakota Lee led off the fourth with a double off the base of the wall in left center.  Joel Rickman was hit by a pitch and Quavian Lawson loaded the bases with a base hit.  Davis brought one in a with an infield hit, and Jake Howeth pushed the score to 4-0 with a two-run single through the left side.
 
In the fifth, Rickman lifted a sac fly to center, and Lawson blasted an RBI double to straight away center.
 
JCC's Zak Trevino broke up Martin's no-hit bid with a single to left with one out in the sixth.  The Bulldogs took advantage of a pair of TWU errors in the seventh to plate four runs only one of which was earned.
 
Martin (1-0) earned the win after allowing no runs on one hit and two walks while striking out three in 5.2 innings of work.
 
Howeth went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI.  Lawson and Davis each had a pair of hits as well.
 
The Rams got right back to work offensively in game two.  Three singles, including an RBI knock from Lawson led to a quick 2-0 advantage.
 
In the third inning, Howeth touched off the first TWU home run of the season, a towering shot to left field.  JCC's Javion Randle answered with a home run to lead off the fourth, but the Rams got that run right back with an RBI double from Jonathan Bravo in the bottom of the frame.
 
The Bulldogs cut the margin down to 4-2 with an RBI single from Thomas Muhlethaler in the sixth.
 
In the seventh, Artie Lopez delivered a pinch hit double for the Bulldogs.  An RBI single from Andrew Clark and a sac fly from Ernie Aguilera tied the game at 4-4.  With two outs, a shot from Shaquille Thomas hit the third base bag and bounded down the left field line for a double that plated the go ahead run for Jarvis.
 
Luke McDonough came on in the ninth for the Bulldogs and shut the door with a one-two-three inning.  Juan Vera (1-0) got the win by recording the last out of the sixth inning, stranding runners at second and third.
 
TWU freshman Alex Lopez pitched well in his collegiate debut.  Lopez allowed four runs, three earned on seven hits and a walk while striking out four in 6.1 innings.  Easton Etter (0-1) walked the only batter he faced and was tagged with the loss as that runner later scored the winning run.
 
Howeth made it three straight multi-hit games to start the season by going 2-for-4 with a home run at the plate.  Jose Martinez went 2-for-3 in the loss.
 
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they host Arlington Baptist College.  That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field.
