Rams Take 1-0 Win in 12 Innings

Box Score

SUGAR LAND, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (4-3) took a 1-0 win in twelve innings against the University of Houston-Victoria (4-7) on Saturday.

Jake Howeth and Manny Sanchez led off the game with back-to-back singles for the Rams, but Cory Carter retired three in a row to get out of the jam.  That was as close as either team came to scoring against starters Sam Martin (TWU) and Cory Carter (UHV).

Texas Wesleyan loaded the bases in the eighth after a single from Sanchez and a pair of walks, but Carter was up to the task again.

Carter allowed no runs on five hits and four walks while striking out seven in eight innings.  Martin meanwhile, allowed just six hits while striking out seven and walking none in eight innings.

The bullpens were just as impressive.  Texas Wesleyan Connor Zamora retired the first nine hitters he faced.

In the twelfth, Ryan Adams drew a one-out walk.  Adams stole second, and with two outs, Howeth delivered an RBI double.  In the bottom of the inning, the Jaguars got a one-out single from Blake Diver.  A walk to Matthew Herrera put the winning run on base with two outs, but Zamorra ended the game with a strikeout.

Zamorra (1-0) got the win with four scoreless innings of relief work.  He allowed just a hit and a walk, while striking out seven.  Matt Brister (0-2) took the loss after surrendering a run on a hit and a walk in two innings.

Howeth and Sanchez both went 2-for-6 at the plate in the win.  Quavian Lawson added two hits in three at bats.

The Rams and Jaguars will tangle again on Sunday, in Victoria, TX.  That game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
