VICTORIA, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (4-4) suffered an 8-5 loss at the University of Houston-Victoria (5-7) on Saturday. The Jaguars used a five-run seventh inning to secure the win.
After going scoreless through the first eleven innings on Saturday, the Rams wasted no time pushing a run across the plate on Sunday. For the second straight day,
Jake Howeth and
Manny Sanchez led off the game with back-to-back singles. This time the Rams loaded the bases with one out and
Dakota Lee ripped a two-run double.
Mitch McLeod was in control on the mound for the Rams. The Jaguars did notch an unearned run in the third, but Texas Wesleyan scored two in the fourth with a leadoff double from
Adam Turpin and RBI singles from
Garrett Grayand Sanchez.
Kyle Bludau led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and later scored to bring the score to 4-2. UHV notched one more run off of McCleod in the sixth to get within a run at 4-3.
In the seventh, the Jaguars sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs on three singles and two walks. The Rams got a run back when Turpin doubled and scored in the eighth, but it was not enough.
McCleod received no decision after allowing three runs, two earned on four hits in six innings of work. Bo Sheridan (1-0) earned the win after allowing an unearned run on two hits in three innings of relief work. Blake Ballard (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on two hits in a third of an inning.
Turpin went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored in the loss. Howeth, Sanchez, and
Tyler Kamtz each had a pair of hits as well.
The Rams will return to action on Monday, when they host Park University. That game is schedule for a 1:30 p.m. start at LaGrave Field.
