OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The 20th ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (8-7, 2-0 SAC) saw its first action in Sooner Athletic Conference competition on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader at Mid-America Christian (2-9, 0-2 SAC). The Rams took game one 6-1 before junior pitcher
Mitch McLeod tossed a no-hitter in a 10-0 game-two route.
McCleod (3-0) used 106 pitches to go the distance in the run-shortened seven-inning contest in game two. He allowed six base-runners on five walks and a dropped third strike while striking out 11 on the day. Just one ball made it out of the infield (a fly to right in the first inning), as he recorded seven ground ball outs.
"Mitch had really good stuff today," commented head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "He didn't have his best command, but he made some great pitches to get ground balls and a big double-play when he needed it.
The Evangels had perhaps their best scoring chance in the second inning, when they put runners at second and third with one out, but McCleod came up with back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
Meanwhile, a two-run double from
Jake Howeth got the Rams on the board in the third inning. An RBI double from
Joel Rickman and a two-run single from
Manny Sanchez made it 5-0 in the sixth.
The Rams put the game well out of reach with five runs on seven hits while sending ten men to the plate in the seventh. That also pushed the score to 10-0, enough to end the contest early.
Zach Abbott (0-3) took the loss after allowing two runs on a hit in two innings pitched.
Rickman,
Tyler Kamtz,
Jonathan Bravo, and
Adam Turpin each had a pair of hits in the win.
In game one,
Sam Martin (3-0) did the heavy lifting on the mound for the Rams. Martin used 102 pitches to complete the scheduled seven-inning contest. He allowed one run on six hits and two walks while striking out nine.
The Rams loaded the bases with one-out in the first inning, and scored a run on a
Dakota Lee single before Christian Hill could work out of the jam.
Turpin led off the third inning for the Rams and launched his first home run of the season. Kamtz brought two more runs home in the inning with a two-out triple.
The Evangels got their lone run of the day in the fourth inning with an RBI single from Chevin Noone. The Rams came right back and put two more runs on the board in the fifth with a two-run double from Sanchez.
Hill (0-3) allowed six runs, four earned, on 12 hits in seven innings of work.
Lee was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. The top three in the Texas Wesleyan order, Bravo, Turpin, and Howeth each had a pair of hits as Texas Wesleyan outhit MACU 28-6 on the day.
The Rams and Evangels will complete their three-game series with a single contest on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
