Knights Edge Rams in Overtime, 104-102

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (13-10, 6-7 SAC) suffered a 104-102 loss in overtime despite a 40-point effort from senior guard Jorge Redmon against Northwood University (5-13, 4-9 SAC) in the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday.

In their first meeting of the season, the two teams combined to commit 69 fouls and shoot 80 free throws.  Texas Wesleyan came away with a 74-72 victory in regulation in Cedar Hill that time around.  Thursday's contest featured 61 whistles and 76 free throws, and again the visiting team shot a higher percentage at the line.

Northwood had the upper hand early, leading for most of the first half.  The Knights took their largest lead of the game at 43-33 with 5:30 to play, when Redmon got hot.  In the remaining 5:30, Redmon scored 18 of his 30 first half points.  He knocked down five three-pointers and hit a shot at the buzzer that sent his team to the locker room up 52-49.

Midway through the second half, the Knights went on a 14-1 run that spanned 3:03 of gametime to garner an 88-80 lead.  The lead swelled to ten at 94-84 with just 4:50 to play, but the Rams were undaunted.  A three-point play from Dallas Jones and a shot beyond the arc from Deonte Jones bookended 14 unanswered points that gave the Rams a 98-94 lead with 2:36 to play.

After a Eugene Gipson free throw cut the margin to three points, Northwood's Jordan Johnson drove wildly to the hole, laid the ball in and was fouled.  Johnson missed the bonus shot, but the Rams could not convert offensively.  Everett Pleasant then came up with an offensive rebound and was fouled.  Pleasant tied the game at 98 with the second of two free throws.  Texas Wesleyan played for the final shot, but could not find the net and the game rolled into overtime.

In the extra period, Redmon gave the Rams a 102-100 lead with a three-point play.  BJ Dale later put the Knights on top 105-104 with 22 seconds to play after converting a three-point play of his own followed by a layup.

The Rams tried a quick shot that would not go.  BBruce Jacobs' tip-in also rimmed out.  The Knights secured a rebound and the Rams had to foul.  Dale left the door open by hitting just one-of-two free throws to bring the score to 104-102 with three seconds to play.  The Rams got the ball up the floor as the seconds ticked away, but Vernell Blackman's shot at the buzzer did not go off in time and the Knights escaped with the win.

The Knights outshot the Rams 57%-43% from the floor and 66% (29-44) – 59% (19-32) at the free throw line.  The Knights also won the battle of the boards, 47-43.  The score was tied 11 times and the lead changed hands ten times.

Redmon finished with a career-high 40 points on 14-of-27 shooting including 6-of-13 three-point attempts.  Redmon added five assists, five steals and four rebounds to an outstanding effort.  Dallas Jones contributed 21 points for the Rams.  Rilwan Bakare finished with 14, Deonte Jones scored 13, and Kenny Rhymes added 10 points in the loss.

Pleasant led five Knights in double-figure scoring with 30 points to go with eight rebounds.  Dale scored 20.  Jerrick Massenburge and Chace Franklin each scored 13, and Eugene Gipson finished with 12 points.

The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they travel down Highway 287 to take on fourth ranked Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, TX.  That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
