Martin Tosses One-Hitter: Rams Eagles Split

FORT WORTH, TX:  Pitching was the order of the day at LaGrave Field on Saturday.  Texas Wesleyan University (3-2) split a doubleheader with Avila University (1-1).  Avila took game one 1-0 in extra innings before Texas Wesleyan's Sam Martin tossed a one-hitter in a 2-1 game-two victory.
 
In game one, Texas Wesleyan's Mitch McLeod and Avila's Brian McNulty matched each other pitch for pitch through seven innings.  In the bottom of the sixth, Jake Howeth drew a leadoff walk, and the Rams put runners at first and third with two outs.  McNulty picked Quavian Lawson off at first base, and the Eagles were able to record the out and end the inning before Howeth could score.
 
Stephen Montisano led off the seventh with a base hit.  The Eagles bunted Montisano to second base.  A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs, but McCleod enduced an inning-ending ground ball from Alex Quiros.
 
Avery Sullivan came on in relief in the eighth inning.  AU's Ben Koerner led off the frame with a double.  Anthony Zicarelli bunted Koerner to third, and Kyle Simmons lifted a fly ball to right.  Howeth's throw to the plate was in time, but skipped away and Koerner broke the scoreless tie.
 
Jonathan Bravo greeted new hurler Ryan Ford with a single to left in the bottom of the eighth.  Howeth followed with a ground ball to third, but an errant throw put runners at the corners with no outs.  Ford got out of the jam by retiring the next three hitters in order.
 
McNulty (1-0) got the win after allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four in seven innings pitched.  Ford picked up the save with a scoreless eighth.
 
Sullivan (0-1) took the loss after allowing a run on one hit.  McLeod received no decision with seven scoreless innings.  He allowed four hits and three walks while striking out three.
 
In game two, the Rams loaded the bases in the third inning after a double from Bravo, a walk to Howeth, and a single from Manny SanchezTyler Kamtz pushed across the first TWU run of the day when he was hit by a pitch, and Jose Martinez made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.
 
The Eagles got an unearned run in the fifth, but Sam Martin shut the door.  Martin (2-0) earned the win after allowing just the one unearned tally on one hit and three walks to go with six strikeouts.
 
Colby Lewis (0-1) took the loss after surrendering two runs on four hits and a walk in four innings of work.
 
Howeth went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in the win.
 
The Rams and Eagles will complete their three-game series on Sunday.  First pitch is scheduled for a t12:00 p.m. start.
