CHICKASHA, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (13-10, 6-2 SAC) split a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader at the University of Science & Arts (9-13, 1-7 SAC) on Friday. The Rams took game one 6-4, before the Drovers rallied for an 8-7 win in game two.
Jake Howeth sparked the Texas Wesleyan offense with a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning in game one. The Rams turned a leadoff walk to
Adam Turpin in the second into a 2-0 lead.
USAO's Jaime Gurrola put the Drovers on top when he cracked a three-run homer in the third, but the Rams came back with a two-run single off the bat of
Jose Martinez in the fifth.
USAO tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI double from Rafael Pena in the bottom of the fifth before
Jonathan Bravo brought Turpin home with the eventual game-winning run in the sixth. Turpin added an RBI single in the seventh to push the score to 6-4.
Sam Martin (3-1) earned the win after allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings pitched.
Mitch McLeod picked up his first save of the season by working a perfect seventh inning. Chris Fischer took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits and seven walks in five innings of work.
In game two, the Rams built a 6-0 lead only to see it evaporate. Howeth and
Dakota Lee knocked in runs in the first inning.
Tyler Kamtz singled and scored in the third inning, and an RBI double from Bravo highlighted a there run fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Drovers manufactured a seemingly harmless run. Then, in the sixth, the floodgates opened. USAO batted around and scored five runs on four hits, a walk, and an error to tie the game at 6-6.
Two errors and a passed ball allowed
Anthony Samuel to score in the top of the seventh, and the Rams reclaimed the lead at 7-6. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Pena and Owen Adams delivered back-to-back RBI singles and the Drovers walked off with an 8-7 victory.
McCleod worked 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on two hits, but received no decision.
Avery Sullivan (2-2) took the loss after allowing a run on two hits. Josh Terrell (3-2) worked all seven innings in the win. He allowed seven runs, only three earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out eight.
The Rams and Drovers will complete their three-game series on Monday. That game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start at USAO's Bill Smith Ballpark.
