Rams Payback Bulldogs

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (14-12) took a 3-1 win over Texas Lutheran University (17-8) at LaGrave Field to earn a season split with the Bulldogs.

As it so often does, the game of baseball gave the Rams an immediate chance at redemption as they faced a Texas Lutheran squad that had handed them a blowout loss the day before.

Keaton Bohrmann staked the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the first inning.

In the third, the Rams got back-to-back singles from Jake Davis and Manny Sanchez. After a walk to Jonathan Bravo loaded the bases, Tyler Kamtz tied the game with a sac fly. Aaron Aleman avoided further damage with two more fly balls to end the inning.

The Bulldogs put two aboard with nobody out in the fourth, but Easton Etter was up to the task, retiring three in a row to hold the score at 1-1.

In the fifth, Sanchez drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bravo. Jake Howeth brought Sanchez home with the go ahead run on a ringing double down the right field line. Dakota Lee followed with an RBI single that brought the score to 3-1.

With one out in the eighth Howeth turned in a sparkling defensive play when he tracked down a drive down the right field line from Klaus Bohrmann with a dive, got to his feet, and doubled the runner off of first base for an inning-ending double play.

Brandon Kaufman picked up his first save of the season with four scoreless innings of relief work. He allowed just a walk, while striking out four.

Etter (2-1) earned the win after allowing a run on three hits and two walks in five innings pitched. Ryan Welch (0-1) took the loss after walking the only hitter he faced.

The Rams are back in action with a Sooner Athletic Conference series against St. Gregory's University this weekend. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field with Saturday's finale scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Sycamore Park.
