Rams Take Series From Cavs

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (16-13, 8-4 SAC) took an 8-6 win over St. Gregory's University (7-19, 2-10 SAC) in Sooner Athletic Conference play at Sycamore Park on Saturday.  With the win, the Rams also claimed a 2-1 series win over the Cavaliers.

SGU snagged the early lead with a two-out RBI single from Mark Milioto in the first inning, but Tyler Kamtz cracked a double to center in the bottom of the frame and scored on a base hit from Dakota Lee.

In the third inning, a two-out double from Jake Howeth followed by another RBI single from Lee gave the Rams a 2-1 edge.

Alex Lopez was in complete control through four innings, at one point setting down 10 Cavaliers in a row.  In the fifth, the Cavs took advantage of a TWU error to put runners at second and third with one out.  Jacob Ratliff then swung the game back in SGU's favor with a two-run single into left center.  Ratliff later scored on a passed ball to push the score to 4-2.

Jake Davis drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth and went all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt.  Davis scored on a single from Adam Turpin.  Howeth then launched a two run homer that gave the Rams the lead back at 5-4.

Joel Rickman gave the Rams some breathing room with a two-run bomb in the sixth.  Kamtz then stretched the lead to 8-4 win an RBI single.

SGU got an RBI triple from Ratliff and an RBI single from Luke Taylor in the ninth to close to 8-6, but Avery Sullivan came on to slam the door with a ground ball and a strikeout.

The save was the second of the season for Sullivan.  Lopez (2-3) picked up the win after allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks while striking ut six in 6.2 innings.  James Savereide (0-5) allowed five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings in the loss.

The middle of the order got it done for the Rams as the three, four, and five hitters (Kamtz, Howeth, and Lee), combined to go 6-for-11 with five RBI and three runs scored.

The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they host UT-Dallas.  That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field.
