OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (17-16, 8-7 SAC) dropped both ends of a doubleheader at 11th ranked Oklahoma City University (23-9, 12-3 SAC) on Saturday. The Stars took game one 8-2 and rode a nine-run second inning to a 10-4 win in game two.
Saturday's doubleheader gave OCU a sweep of the season series and stretched their current winning streak over the Rams to 15 games, dating back to a 1-0 win in Fort Worth in 2006 in which All-American pitcher Shea Harrison tossed a one-hit shutout.
In the first game on Saturday, the Stars got an RBI single from Forrest Smith in the first, but Texas Wesleyan came back with back-to-back run-scoring doubles from
Tyler Kamtz and
Jake Howeth in the third.
The Rams' lead held until Austin Murphy walked and scored in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. OCU broke the game open with four runs in a fifth inning rally that included RBI singles from Jared Baker and Murphy.
A pair of unearned runs in the sixth accounted for the 8-2 final score.
Michael Nolan (4-2) earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six in seven innings pitched.
Sam Martin (5-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season after allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Jose Martinez was 2-for-3 at the plate in the game-one loss.
The Rams were looking good early in game two. Kamtz reached on an OCU error in the first and scored on a double from Howeth. A two-run single from Kamtz pushed the score to 3-0 in the second; however, the Rams missed an opportunity to tack onto their lead leaving the bases loaded.
Things spiraled out of control in the bottom of the second. The Stars sent 13 men to the plate and scored nine runs on three walks, a hit batter, and five hits including a grand slam from Smith.
OCU added an RBI double from Garrett Foster in the sixth, and the Rams capped the scoring with an RBI single from Martinez in the seventh.
Brad Wieck (1-3) picked up the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out 11 in six innings.
Mitch McLeod (3-4) took the loss after allowing nine runs, three earned, on six hits in four innings.
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they host Texas College in a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field.
